My son’s blue, Cher headpiece cookie and his frosted version of sorority president Elle Woods landed center stage on the cookie platter this year, set off by his cousin David’s greedy pig and a cartoon cookie by Tyler that I call the Great and Powerful Oz.
Before sharing more highlights though, I must give a huge shout out to niece Dana Marie, a cookie decorating alum in the Midwest, who sent two packages of candy eyeballs that arrived just in time to give this year’s cast of characters some added pop and wow. Our cookie decoration nation has been forever changed.
Per usual, the cutout ornament cookies were decorated as something else. (Note to self: Bake more of those next year.) I’m crazy about David’s updated fish bowl and Nik’s hot air balloon.
When I commented on the cute pink air balloon, my naughty nephew informed me, “It’s a nipple.” I should have known. His “Beach Babies” this year grew up to be strippers, complete with dollar bill tips tucked into their thongs.
Other new confectionery treats were the decorative pearls, a gift from my artist friend Liz. With only half of Team Drew here, Lily, who looks lovely in pearls, and David, who prefers 24 carat, used them to add touches of Wonderland chic to some cookie classics.
Newbie decorator Andrew’s take on SNL’s Mr. Bill paired perfectly with David’s House on Fire. There’s a safety message here, people: Be sure to turn off those Christmas tree lights before going out for the night.
Many of the dough scraps I bake as snacks to be washed down with the bubbly were frosted instead of eaten and ended up on my top faves list. Would they be as cute without those candy eyes? I think not.
Lastly, I think Nik’s mod cookies look like they should be starring in a new animated TV series. I just love these.
So, pretty please with sugar on top, which are your favorites from this “Best of” batch of of 2013?

Oh, the ever wondrous abilities of our talented Tarkovka family! In Russia the Tarkovkas
were noted for their artisan grub and snail manufactory where dry matzahs were turned into
great holiday delicacies. You have inherited well.
They are all a Christmas/Holiday delight! It’s tough to pick a favorite, but I really like Elle and the burning house. I watched Legally Blonde the other night, and that’s a dead-on replica. Plus, who doesn’t need to be reminded to turn the lights off at night so they don’t burn their house down?? They are all great and I’m sure it was a cookie blast making them!
It’s official. The “eyes” have it.
Oh, I love them all and love, love the EYES!!!
Yes, the candy eyes this year were the best! Sure to be a permanent cookie feature. 🙂
