Every December 1, people across the globe mark World AIDS Day. It’s a time of reflection, of celebrating the lives of the people we’ve lost, and mourning all the possibilities that were taken from them. It’s also a chance to re-share the story of my dear friend Harry:

My kid Harry met their Uncle Harry for the first time while visiting Los Angeles in February 1991, a month before their first birthday. They took their first step at Uncle Harry’s house. My heart swelled seeing them together. But it was also the last time they would meet. Uncle Harry left this world on Christmas Eve 1992, at the age of 39, from complications with AIDS. And today, on World AIDS Day, like most days, I’m remembering him with immense love.

Fabric from one of my shirts is in a quilt panel our friend Rose made for the AIDS Memorial Quilt. And Harry Stein remains a treasured being in the patchwork of my life 💜

Watching the service to honor former First Lady Ro

Watching the service to honor former First Lady Rosalynn Carter today I learned from grandson Jason of her most viral moment — she and Jimmy on the kiss cam at an Atlanta Braves game, which apparently became a regular event.

When I heard of her passing, I’d remembered the murmurs when she attended her first Cabinet meeting in 1977. That she’d established the first office of the First Lady in the East Wing, expanding the role, and that she’d testified before Congress as an advocate for mental health issues. But it was what Jimmy Carter said, after 77 years of marriage and an even longer love story, that I’ll never forget. I am, after all, a romantic.

“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me."

This week we marked Intersex Awareness Day, which is all about the "I" in LGBTQIA+. Intersex people are born with a variety of differences in their sex traits and reproductive anatomy.

Did you know that according to researchers, around 1.7% of people are born with intersex traits? Upper estimates reach nearly 2% - more than the entire population of Japan!

This is all to say that intersex people are members of every community. When we understand more about the experiences and insights of intersex people, we create a stronger and more inclusive world.

Not only are the book's fascinating, meticulously researched short stories true, but they’re written with such insight that one gets the sense of what each of these historic leaders was actually feeling.

I am so excited to share that my memoir, My Son Wears Heels, is included in the first 100 titles in the Big Ten Open Books Project's Gender and Sexuality studies collection!

When my book came out in 2016, my hope was that it would help other people understand their own families, the power of unconditional love, and the importance of being a life-long learner. Today, I am sure there are places where my book isn't welcome. By working to make books on gender and sexuality free and accessible, the Big Ten Academic Alliance is fighting back against book bans and lighting a path toward the future 💜

When my mother cleaned out her basement in the ‘70s, I gave my 1959 Birthday Suit Barbie and their wardrobe to my friend’s young daughters. I thought that was the end of my Barbie experience. But then @skirtsuit arrived on the scene and, by demand, Barbie was reincarnated into my life.

At Toys R Us, 2yo Harry pointed immediately to Cinderella Barbie. @kenhanson and I exchanged Harry-wants-a-Barbie looks before reminding our kid they really hadn’t even looked around the store. A small, quivering lip gave way to a scene that turned other shoppers’ heads. And voilà, Harry had their first Barbie. I remember thinking later it a smart choice, because Cinderella Barbie came with not one, but two outfits. Princesses Ariel and Jasmine soon joined Harry’s royal Barbie line up.

“Barbies can be doctors, too, you know,” I told Barbie-obsessed Harry when I gave them a Dr. Barbie in 1994.
“I know that,” Harry said, tearing off her white lab coat. I watched them dig through a bin of Barbie clothes to find a cuter outfit. “But doctors still go to balls after work, right?” they asked, pulling out Belle’s glittery yellow satin gown.
Yes, I suppose they do,” I replied, thinking probably a fundraiser. As for the pink stethoscope that came with Dr. Barbie, she wore it as a belt.

In the elementary school years that followed, Harry & friends’ Barbie dramas often involved active volcanos, pools of hot lava or disastrous Barbie Porsche crashes down the staircase.

Before Harry left for college, I attended their last performance with the Rocky Horror Picture Show cast…and the memory of their show opener lip-sync to “Barbie Girl” still makes me blush!

I do smile hard though whenever I see the selfie Harry sent me of their Barbie-heads wig creation. I wonder if Harry will wear it to see the Barbie movie…and with what pink outfit? And what will I wear?? Kinda wish my white sunglasses had blue lenses.

On Friday, the Supreme Court of the United States

On Friday, the Supreme Court of the United States sided with a web designer in Colorado who said she had a First Amendment right to refuse to provide services for same-sex marriages, despite a state law that forbids discrimination against gay people.

I’m horrified but sadly not surprised by this ruling in favor of anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry and discrimination, especially on the heels of the affirmative action ruling that now extends only to white legacy students.

In this moment, on the final day of Pride Month 2023, we need remember that LGBTQ allyship is a year-round endeavor. We must speak up, stand tall, and vote with all our might at every opportunity. We will NOT be silenced!
