Turns out that my fave humorist David Sedaris is also a huge fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race. At least that what he tells Mark Lawson in this fun interview on the BBC’s Front Row: Cultural Exchange. Sedaris mentions his favorite contestant and gives a formula for creating your drag name. It’s the same formula I’d heard years ago as the stripper name formula.
To apply the drag name formula (aka the stripper name formula), take the name of your first pet and the name of the first street you lived on. According to my kid Harry, no drag artists do that. Harry’s drag identity has changed several times since age 16. He’s gone from Catty Foxxx to Rosetta Stone to the now “filthy/gorgeous” Ambrosia Alert. While David Sedaris doesn’t mention his own drag name, I’m hopeful his love for Drag Race may land him a spot as a guest judge in the upcoming season 6.
So what’s your formulated drag name? Please share in the comments below, because I, “Jet Sheffield,” really want to know.
